Frequently Asked Questions

  • Enrolled at least part-time (at least 6 credits for undergraduates, 4 credits for graduates), at the University of Washington Seattle during each quarter of employment, except summer quarter
  • Completed at least 2 quarters at the University of Washington Seattle prior to application deadline
  • No minimum GPA or specific courses are required to be an Academic Success Coach

Academic Success Coaches work 6-10 hours per week. Coaches' schedules change quarterly based on coaches' availability. Shifts are set weekly and typically are Mondays - Thursdays, 8 am - 6 pm and Fridays, 9 am - 5 pm.

  • Fall Quarter will be closer to 8-10 hours per week due to training requirements.

New tutors must attend/ complete:

  • Asynchronous, online training in Summer 2025 (10-15 hours total)
  • Coaching Fall Orientation, Date TBD (September 2025)
  • GEN ST 375: Tutoring in Higher Education (CLUE Tutor Training Course)
    • Tuesdays, 5 pm - 6:20 pm weekly in Fall Quarter 2025

Tutoring focuses more on subject specific content, such as supporting a student with a math problem they are working on or writing an essay. Academic Success Coaching focuses more on the strategies to academic success. It is more holistic in practice and supports the student in getting to where they want to be. It is very personalized and student focused. Coaching involves supporting a student in navigating how to be student at UW. 

Common topics include:

  • Time Management - How to manage one's time in college, finding the time management system that works best for you
  • Study strategies - finding personalized strategies and how to adjust them
  • Goal setting - setting goals to academic success and creating actionable steps
  • Motivation - How to stay motivated in courses 
  • Navigating UW resources - Who to go to when and how to reach out to support

As peers, coaches share their own personal experiences at UW while also supporting the student in finding strategies that work best for them.

In the Academic Success Coach position, coaches will:

  • Gain professional competencies in interpersonal communication, collaboration, time management, and strong teamwork skills
  • Develop a strong understanding of best practices in relationship to coaching and student support in higher education, especially with respect to educational equity
  • Learn how to best engage in coaching and teaching with a diverse student population in both one-on-one and group settings
  • Develop a strong understanding of how to integrate departmental goals/ mission into coaching practice
  • Enhance student support skills by learning how to assess individual student needs and provide appropriate resource referrals

While any student at UW can meet with Academic Success Coaches, we also have some specialized coaching positions that help us support specific student populations. These hiring timelines can differ and depends on the position. 

Here are some of the specialized positions we currently have:

  • Allen School Success Coach - supporting students in the Paul G. Allen Center for Computer Science & Engineering
  • Engineering Success Coach - supporting students in the College of Engineering
  • Graduate Student Success Coach - supporting students in graduate school or students interested in learning about graduate school
  • Reinstatement Coach - supporting students who were reinstated back to the University 
  • Transfer Student Success Coach - supporting students who transferred to UW

Undergraduate students: $21.57 per hour
Graduate students: $23.57 per hour

The contract states that effective 7/1/2025, the minimum ASE hourly rates will be increased according to contract guidelines.

We are currently hiring drop-in tutors for the 2025-2026 academic year! Here is the application timeline:
