Frequently Asked Questions

For all subject areas:

  • Enrolled at least part-time (at least 6 credits for undergraduates, 5 credits for graduates, 2 credits for PhD candidates), at the University of Washington Seattle during each quarter of employment, except summer quarter
  • Successful completion of introductory coursework within each discipline (see table below)

Tutors are required to have successfully completed the courses in their chosen discipline (listed below). Courses may be in progress at the time of application but must be completed before the start of employment. Completion of equivalent accelerated/honors courses will also satisfy this requirement. There is no minimum GPA requirement.

The courses listed below will be covered as an exam review some time during the academic year. You must be comfortable hosting an exam review for all of the courses listed in the subject you are applying for. Please check position description for more information about submitting transcripts and about mapping out course translations if you have taken courses outside of UW.

Study Group tutors must be able to host study groups in-person in Mary Gates Hall Mondays through Thursdays from 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm. Tutors do not work every night of the week but must be available in evenings. Shifts are 1-3 hours long and each tutor works 1-3 nights a week. Schedule changes quarterly based on tutor availability. 

  • Hours: 6-8 hours per week

New tutors must attend/ complete:

  • Asynchronous, online training (10 hours total)
  • CLUE Fall Orientation Training
  • GEN ST 375: Tutoring in Higher Education (CLUE Tutor Training Course)
    • Tuesdays, 5 pm - 6:20 pm weekly in Fall Quarter

In the study group tutor position, tutors will:

  • Gain professional competencies in time management, effective communication, and strong teamwork skills
  • Develop strong understanding of best practices in relationship to tutoring and teaching in higher education, especially with respect to educational equity
  • Learn how to best engage in teaching and tutoring with a diverse student population in one-on-one and group settings
  • Develop a strong understanding of how to integrate departmental goals/mission into teaching and tutoring practice

Undergraduate/Graduate students: $23.78 per hour

The contract states that effective 7/1/2026, the minimum ASE hourly rates will be increased according to contract guidelines.
