The virtual learning environment allows for students and faculty to engage in higher education while remaining in their own respective locations.
Online teaching takes place in two different modes: asynchronous and synchronous.
Instructors prepare course materials for students in advance. Students may access the course materials at their own pace and complete assignments when they choose to over an assigned period of time. Asynchronous teaching relies on platforms such as Canvas, recorded lectures, films, discussion boards and other assignments.
Instructors and students gather at class time and interact in real time. Synchronous sessions employ Zoom for shared learning time such as lectures and small group work.
